Every refillable device has three parts

Strip any refillable vape down and you'll find the same three pieces working together.

The device or mod is the reusable, rechargeable part. It houses the battery and the electronics that control wattage or voltage. Pod systems build this into a compact all-in-one body; larger “box mod” kits separate the battery from the tank and usually offer more power and more settings.

The pod or tank holds your e-liquid. Pod systems typically use small, sealed or refillable pods with the coil built in or snapped in; box mods pair with a separate, refillable sub-ohm tank.

The coil is the heating element that turns e-liquid into vapor. It's a wear part — flavor fades and vapor production drops as a coil ages, and replacing it is normal maintenance rather than a sign anything is broken.

Pod systems vs. mod-and-tank setups

Pod systems are built around mouth-to-lung (MTL) draws — a tighter pull, closer to a cigarette, at lower wattage — and they typically use nicotine salt e-liquid at higher strengths for a smoother throat feel per puff. Mod-and-tank setups usually run sub-ohm coils at higher wattage for a more open, direct-lung draw and bigger vapor, and they're normally paired with freebase e-liquid instead. Neither format is objectively better; they're built around different draw styles, and picking the wrong e-liquid family for your device is one of the most common beginner mismatches. What coil resistance (ohms) actually means

Every coil is printed with a resistance rating in ohms (Ω). Lower numbers mean less resistance, which generally allows more power through the coil for bigger vapor and a warmer, more open draw; higher numbers mean more resistance, which suits lower-wattage, tighter-draw devices like most pod systems. This is a purely electrical spec, not a measure of quality or strength — it just tells you what wattage range and draw style a coil is designed for, and devices are built to work within a specific resistance range.

What “compatible” actually means

This is the part beginners get burned on most often: pods, coils and tanks are built around brand- and model-specific platforms, and a similar name or a similar-looking connector does not mean two parts are interchangeable. UWELL's Caliburn G4 Pro uses the Caliburn GPP pod platform; it is not built to accept a Caliburn G3 pod or a different brand's pod. Vaporesso's XROS 5 uses XROS-series pods with COREX coil technology; those pods aren't interchangeable with Vaporesso's Eco Nano pods, even though both are Vaporesso products. When in doubt, bring the device in or know its exact model name — our staff can confirm the correct pod, coil or tank before you buy.

Specs below come from each manufacturer's published data sheets, current as of this writing. Manufacturers occasionally revise specs between production runs, so treat these as a close reference rather than a guarantee, and selection in store may vary.

The Aegis Mini 5, Solo 3 and H45 (Hero 5) share the same Aegis platform and IP68-rated construction as the Legend 5 but scale the battery and wattage down for a smaller footprint — ask staff which body size fits the tank and wattage range you want.

Tanks and coils for mod setups

If you're running a mod rather than a pod system, the tank and coil are chosen separately from the device. We carry Geekvape's Z Subohm (Zeus) tank with Z Series coils in a couple of common resistances, and Vaporesso's iTank T paired with GTi mesh coils in several resistances. As with pods, match the coil to the specific tank it's designed for — a Z Series coil is built for the Zeus tank's coil deck, not for an unrelated tank that happens to accept a similar physical size.

When to replace a pod or coil

A fading, muted, or burnt-tasting draw is the most common sign a coil needs replacing — there's no fixed schedule, since it depends heavily on how often you vape and what e-liquid you use. Pods with built-in coils, like most MTL pod systems, get replaced as a unit. Separate coils for tanks and refillable pods, like Geekvape's Z Series or Vaporesso's GTi line, get swapped individually. Keeping a spare pod or coil on hand avoids being caught without one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a Caliburn pod in a different brand's device?

No. Pod platforms are brand- and model-specific. A Caliburn GPP pod is built for Caliburn GPP-compatible devices only.

Do higher-wattage devices produce more nicotine?

Wattage affects vapor volume and how quickly e-liquid is vaporized, not the nicotine concentration itself, which is set by the e-liquid's labeled strength. We don't recommend increasing wattage or strength as a general practice — use whatever your device and preference call for.

How do I know which resistance coil my device needs?

Check the device or pod packaging, or ask staff to confirm before you buy a replacement — using a coil outside a device's supported resistance range can cause performance issues.

Is a pod system or a mod better for a first-time refillable setup?

Most adults new to refillable devices start with an MTL pod system like the XROS 5 or Caliburn G4 Pro since they're simpler to operate. A mod and tank setup offers more power and customization once you know what draw style you prefer.
