A Beginner's Guide to Premium Glass

Ember Smoke & Vape

What sets premium glass apart, the main types you will see, and how to choose a piece that fits your taste.

Article body

Glass ranges from a simple everyday spoon pipe to carefully built recyclers and dab rigs from established makers. If you're new to shopping for premium glass, here's what actually separates the categories, what the size and fitting numbers mean, and how to think about choosing a piece.

What makes glass feel “premium”

Quality mostly comes down to three things: the thickness and consistency of the borosilicate glass itself, the care in construction (clean joints, even welds, no thin spots), and the reputation of the maker. Heavier, well-finished pieces tend to feel more durable in the hand, though craftsmanship varies piece to piece even within the same line — that's part of why many glass items are effectively one of a kind.

Joint sizes, explained simply

Water pipes, bowls, downstems and rig parts are sized by joint diameter, and getting this right matters more than almost anything else when buying a replacement part. The common sizes are 10mm, 14mm and 18/19mm. A bowl or downstem has to match the joint size of the piece it's going into — a 14mm bowl will not sit correctly in a 10mm or 19mm joint. If you're replacing a bowl, downstem or banger and aren't sure of your piece's joint size, bring the piece in and we can match it on the spot rather than guessing from a description.

The main types you'll see

Hand pipes (spoons) are the simplest format — no water chamber, fully portable. GRAV's Classic Spoon and Pebble Spoon lines are a common starting point. Water pipes and beakers route smoke through water for a cooler, filtered draw; sizes and shapes vary widely, from compact beakers to taller straight tubes. Bubblers are a hybrid: water filtration in a hand-pipe-sized body, like GRAV's Hourglass Pocket Bubbler. Recyclers add a second chamber that continuously cycles water through the piece, which is more visually complex and typically a step up in both build and price — Human Grade's recycler line is a good example of the format. Dab rigs are a smaller, purpose-built water pipe used with a banger instead of a bowl; MJ Arsenal's Alpine Apex Mini Rig is a compact example we carry.

Percolators, in plain terms

A percolator is any internal structure that breaks smoke into smaller bubbles as it passes through water, which increases filtration surface area and generally produces a smoother, cooler draw. Percolator styles range from simple stemless designs to more elaborate internal structures, and more elaborate isn't automatically better — it usually means more surface area to clean, too, so it's worth weighing filtration against how easy a piece is to maintain (see our glass cleaning guide for upkeep).

Dab rig accessories

If you're setting up a dab rig, a few parts complete it: a banger (the heated surface, sized to your joint and available in standard or full-weld builds), and a carb cap (which controls airflow over the banger). Human Grade's bucket and gavel-bottom bangers and MJ Arsenal's carb cap lineup are both in stock in a range of styles. Bangers and caps are sold separately from the rig itself, so confirm joint size and style before you buy.

Brands we carry

Our glass case rotates, but a few brands are consistently represented: GRAV for straightforward, well-known spoon pipes and bubblers; Human Grade for recyclers, beakers, and the widest range of functional parts (downstems, bowls, bangers, carb caps) in multiple joint sizes; MJ Arsenal for colorful, durable borosilicate pieces including mini rigs, bubblers and bongs; and smaller runs from makers like Hemper and BigFun! for novelty and specialty designs. Individual pieces come and go as inventory rotates, so the best way to see current options is in person.

Choosing a piece

Think about three things: how you'll use it (portable hand pipe vs. a piece that mostly stays on a shelf or table), how easy it will be to keep clean (more percolation generally means more cleaning), and the look you actually want, since glass is highly tactile and photos rarely do a piece justice. Seeing pieces in person — and asking staff about joint size, percolator style, and material thickness — makes a real difference versus buying sight unseen.

Frequently asked questions

What joint size do most beginner water pipes use?

14mm is the most common size for hand-sized water pipes and rigs, though 10mm and 18/19mm pieces are both common too. Always check before buying a replacement bowl or downstem.

Is more percolation always better?

Not necessarily — more internal structure means more surface area to clean and can restrict airflow. It's a genuine trade-off, not a strict upgrade.

Can I mix and match parts from different brands?

Yes, as long as the joint sizes and genders (male/female) match. Brand doesn't need to match, but size does.

How do I know if a piece is well made?

Look for even wall thickness, clean joints without rough edges, and a stable base. In store, staff can point out these details on specific pieces.
